In 2025, a new cytomegalovirus (CMV) screening law was passed in Oregon. This law requires screening for CMV of certain newborns, which goes into full effect 4/1/26. Audiologists are a crucial part of the follow-up care for babies flagged with CMV. Babies who do not pass their newborn hearing screening and are identified with CMV will need rapid audiologic follow-up to guide potential antiviral treatment. The identification of CMV status in infants is a risk factor for late-onset and progressive hearing loss, and frequent hearing evaluations of these infants is necessary.
